Ransomware is an ever-evolving form of malware designed to steal business-critical data to then sell this data or to encrypt files on a device, rendering any files and the systems that rely on them unusable. Malicious actors then demand ransom in exchange for decryption. Ransomware attacks are growing and are more sophisticated than ever. They are a sustainable and lucrative business model for cybercriminals. In some cases, it is easier and cheaper to pay the ransom than to recover the data from a backup. However paying the ransom also does not guarantee that a victim’s files will be returned or that the system will be accessible again. Furthermore the affected network may still be infected and fall victim to a subsequent attack, (as they know that you’ll pay up).
