End of support for OneDrive desktop application on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1

Microsoft has communicated a series of dates around the end of support and operation of OneDrive on some older operating systems.

Personal (free) licenses

From January 1, 2022, there will be no more updates for the free OneDrive desktop application on devices with Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 Personal (Home). The synchronization of personal OneDrive desktop applications on these operating systems will no longer work from March 1, 2022. So from this date, your files should be uploaded and viewed directly on OneDrive for web. This online version will of course continue to work, but is considered less practical by some users.

To continue using OneDrive on these operating systems, we recommend switching to a professional license. In addition, you enjoy much more storage and a higher security level.

Professional licences

If you’re using the OneDrive desktop application for business, support for it will be aligned with the Windows support lifecycle from January 1, 2022. In concrete terms, this means that when support for your version of Windows ends, support for your OneDrive desktop application automatically ends.

Currently, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will receive extended support until January 10, 2023. Support for Windows 8 ended on January 12, 2016. The support on Windows 7 and 8.1 of the professional OneDrive desktop version will therefore run until January 10, 2023.

We strongly discourage working with an unsupported operating system or application, as no more (security) updates are released and you are therefore vulnerable to all risks after support has ended.
